Heroism Main Theme in Beowulf - 3076 Words
The main theme of Beowulf is heroism. This involves far more than physical courage. It also means that the warrior must fulfill his obligations to the group of which he is a key member. There is a clear-cut network of social duties depicted in the poem. The king has an obligation to behave with generosity. He must reward his thanes with valuable gifts for their defense of the tribe and their success in battle. This is why King Hrothgar is known as the ââ¬Å"ring-giver.â⬠He behaves according to expectations of the duties of a lord when he lavishly rewards Beowulf and the other Geat warriors for ridding the Danes of Grendelââ¬â¢s menace. But the thanes have their obligation too. (A thane is a warrior who has been rewarded by his king with aâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Beowulf and Hrothgar give praise to God for the defeat of Grendel. The outcome of battles is attributed to the judgment of God, and Beowulf puts his trust in God. The scriptural reference, however, ar e restricted to the Old Testament rather than the New. The story of Cain and Abel is mentioned, for example, in explaining the origins of Grendel. And the sword hilt of Grendelââ¬â¢s mother is engraved with a depiction of the Flood described in the book of Genesis. But Beowulf makes no mention at all of Christ, or an afterlife in heaven for the believer. The burial rites described, in which warriors are buried with their treasure, does not suggest belief in a Christian heaven. Scholars debate the question of how fundamental Christianity is to the poem. It does not strike anyone as a thoroughly Christian work. The atmosphere of much of Beowulf is dark and pagan. There are many references to an impersonal fate that controls the destinies of men. ââ¬Å"Fate goes ever as fate must,â⬠(line 455) says Beowulf, only a few lines after he has referred to the judgment of God. Not long after this, when Beowulf tells of his battles with sea-monsters, he says, ââ¬Å"fate spare s the man it has not already marked.â⬠He does not say God spares the man. One of the books I feel perfectly touches on ethnicity in America specifically is Sandra Cisneros The House on Mango Street. Cisneros tells a coming of age story through brief episodes of a girl named Esperanza her life varying from things about her family, neighborhood, and different dreams and goals that she has. Music evolves at the same fast paced rate as society and is typically influenced from previous genres. Using the beats of their ancestors, they eventually created gospel, blues, jazz, and etcetera. Even these genres would later branch off and evolve into more contemporary genres such as hip hop and rock n roll. From these two types of examples, one may develop an idea of which social class those persons may reside in. In the United States, people have created stereotypes for the social classes which exist within the country.In the United States, there are three major social classes: lower, middle and upper _ The lower class has little education and the Individuals live In poverty. Many associate this class to listen to rap, heavy metal and country. Whether it is a viable part in what musical genres people are involved with, they listen to music and the work in the lower class are listening to various genres that express the anger that can be created through poor living conditions and unrewarding hard work. Middle class people generally are happy since they receive some rewarding attributes in their lives while the lower class usually receives none. The middle class is more likely to reside in the urban and suburban areas of North America. Another reason this is that the middle class may spend their money in different ways than the there social classes. They may spend more towards items such as expensive cars and other items instead of living conditions.For this reason, some in the middle class may still live in lower class conditions and thus they will primarily listen to music associated with that of the lower class. This can be seen in a very specific study created by Adrian North and David Harvests. Part of the study was to include the way people spent their money. It indicates that within the middle class, those that spent their money more responsibly listened to similar music to that of the upper class. People who are employed fall mostly within the middle aged bracket and listen to music created within their time. Retired individuals tended to listen to older versions of music. Mood plays such a large roll in music preference because it can elevate moods as well as channel anxiety and stress through a viable outlet. A study was conducted by a scientist, famous hacker, and graduate of the University of Alabama named Virgil Griffith.Within this study, a direct correlation can be seen between genres of music that the participating students listened to and said students SAT scores. While most alternative and rock music can be found spread all through the spectrum, certain genres stand out on either side. North) Geography has a cultural impact on the way music is listened to and how it is perceived. In the United States, certain stereo-types are associated with where an individuals may inhabit. People that live in an area associated with the creation or utilization of certain music genres generally tend to listen to their native brands of music. The South is known for country, rock n roll, gospel and rap; the Northeast is known for its classical music, operas, Indies-music and electronic/club music; the West is well-known for rap, alternative, punk, and pop; and the Mid-West for its Jazz.For the genre rap, there has always been a battle between east coast and west coast South. Then the college students were asked whether they would consider their parents loving and caring or consider their parents uncaring and not showing much attention to them. Then they were asked to score their parents favorite artists when listening to a soundtrack from that artist. It was found that college students who had loving parents were prone to favor their parents favorite artists more than those who had uncaring, distant parents. Marijuana users may listen to music that stimulates their mind while under the influence of the substance. Genres such as Indies rock and reggae may coincide with the ladybird mood and feeling seers typically tend to listen to more stimulating genres such as fast paced techno and its submerges. These can aid the mind in creating hallucinations and make the trips more intense. One reason these types of music may be preferred by the listener is that often times the music is created either while under the influence of said drugs or for its users.A study was conducted on why more teens are using drugs in 1996. The results showed that friends who were under the influence influenced not only the marijuana drug upon their friends but also influenced the music that they listened to (Haywood 14). The acute type is not persistent for long and is said to result from stressful conditions and disappears soon after the situation normalizes. Chronic insomn ia however is the most common and is often coupled by other conditions such as mental disorders, medication, as well as drug abuse (Lee, 2006). Another sleep disorder that is common today is sleep apnoea. It occurs in two different ways and can therefore be classified as either Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) or central sleep apnoea (CSA). Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome is characterized by partial blockage of the airway which results in difficult when breathing during sleep. Some of the common cases of OSAS are when sleep is accompanied by heavy snoring, a feeling of chocking, instances of complete absence of breathing, and physical movements such as jerking and trembling indicating that the airway has been obstructed. CSA brings about symptoms similar to those of insomniacs coupled with feeling sleepy during the day and awakening during sleep hours. Narcolepsy-cataplexy is a sleep disorder that is marked by frequent sleep attacks especially during the daytime hours. This is often frequent and persists for quite sometime and therefore should not be mistaken from the daytime sleepiness that is as a result of insomnia, interrupted sleep during the previous day, boredom, or due to physical fatigue. The frequent attacks of sleep occur are rapid and one is unable to control falling asleep. It happens for a short duration ranging from seconds to several minutes. A good number of people have been said to suffer from narcolepsy and are aware of the symptoms but most of those who suffer it never seek medical interventions and hence continue to live with the p roblem. The sudden attacks of sleep can in other cases be coupled with a feeling of weak muscles that are unable to support the body, a condition known as cataplexy. When the two sates combine to result in a condition that is referred to as Narcolepsy-cataplexy, the result is an incidence of a total body muscular collapse coupled with some deep sleep lasting for a few minutes and could be confused with epilepsy. The common cause of the condition is said to be a malfunction in the central nervous system which can be kept in control by persistent use of medication (Chou Chuang, 2008). A number of sleep related abnormal behaviors have been related to a sleep disorder known as parasomnia. Parasomnia is a condition associated movements and actions that are unusual during sleep and periods during which one is aroused from sleep either leading to disruption of sleep or not. Several disorders of sleep are categorized under parasomnia. The most common of these is sleepwalking. It is a disor der that is common amongst the children of up to 12 years. Its start is marked by activation of the motor activity when the brain enters a slow wave phase. This is followed by several minutes of abnormal movement around the room or house. There have not been any reported cases of criminal activities that have taken place as a result of sleepwalking. Causes that are said to bring about this condition are lack of enough sleep, exhaustion, prevailing ailment, and certain sedative drugs. Another parasomnia disorder is night terrors. This condition is marked by the person making sharp intense screams in their sleep that are usually combined with a feeling of fear and confusion. Nightmares are said to occur during the phases of slow brain wave movements too. In most cases, patients who are diagnosed with night terrors also experience sleepwalking disorder. Factors said to contribute to night terrors are sleep deprivation, loss of energy, illness, drugs that give a hypnotic feeling, and re lated incidents (Synder, 1987). Another parasomnia related disorder is Rapid Eye Movement sleep disorder (RBD). A person expiring RBD often does action that mimic the dreams they are having usually in the 5th stage of sleep which is the Rapid Eye Movement phase. The abnormal dream actions often end up in injuries to the person or the bed partner. This disorder is mostly experienced amongst the aged population. Bruxism is a sleep disorder that categorized under the parasomnia disorders of sleep. It is marked by abnormal tooth grinding during sleep. They are unique in the description (i.e. 70 years of age, wrinkled skin, Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease, a senior citizen, etc.), but related because these descriptions determine the ââ¬Å"ageâ⬠of an individual. Chronological age describes the years that have passed since the individual was born. A 60 year old, was born 60 years ago and is therefore chronologically older than a 30 year old who was born 30 years ago. There are certain expectations that come from being a certain chronological age such as your physical appearance. Although there are exceptions, one could easily guess an individualââ¬â¢s age (within 10 years) just by their physical appearance. Biological age describes the physical ââ¬Å"wellnessâ⬠of the individual. As a person ages, certain physical changes occur. Organs deteriorate and certain organ cells cease to replicate. The conditions of most organs are consistent with the chronological age of the individual, with the exception of individuals who overuse certain organs (i.e. an alcoholicââ¬â¢s liver). Psychological aging refers to the deterioration of an individualââ¬â¢s sensory and perceptual processes, mental functioning, adaptive capacity, and personality (Hooyman and Kiyak, 2002). This covers a very wide range of functions such as speech and even intellect. Certain mental disorders are consistent with a certain age group. One would find it typical for an elderly person (70 or older) to experience Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease, but would find it atypical for a 20 year old to experience Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease.
